Few things seem more pressing than supporting Ukraine in getting back on its feet in a sustainable, self-preserving and future proofing way.On 4–5 October, the Latvian government, currently holding the presidency of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, will host this years’ EUSBSR Annual Forum in Riga.As the first of the four Macro-Regional Strategies in Europe, the Baltic Sea Region Strategy has always been a front-runner, be it innovation ecosystems, sustainability-oriented citizens, or energy security goals. Countries from the Baltic Sea Region are working together to develop renewable energy sources and to improve energy efficiency. In addition, much effort is being put into the promotion of regional trade and investment and improving interconnections between the countries in the region and beyond.High on the agenda at this years' Annual Forum will be support to the sustainable rebuilding of Ukraine, and how the Baltic Sea Region can be a resourceful partner in helping Ukraine regain strength in years to come, not least when it comes to rebuilding key sectors in a future proof and sustainable way.Personally, I am thrilled to welcome several exciting guests to our cross-policy workshop and roundtable on 'Strengthening and developing collaboration with Ukraine to empower sustainable rebuilding', organised by Elsi Kauppinen. Former Acting Minister of Agricultural policy and Food of Ukraine, and Agrifood Team lead at Mykolaiv Water HubFormer, Olga Trofimtseva will share her experience and perspectives on BSR/Ukraine collaboration, and Dina Popluga with Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies will lend her unique expertise to our roundtable on Bioeconomy, hosted by the The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council.Don't miss this opportunity to meet and mingle with key stakeholders in the Baltic Sea Region, to help support platforms for collaboration and encourage joint efforts to stregthen our regional resilience. #balticsearegion #energusecurity #annualforum #eusbsr #bioeconomy #sustainableagriculture #circularity #rebuildukraine https://lnkd.in/dRCwBk_5

Director for Zero Pollution and Green Cities

It has been a real pleasure to chair last Friday the panel on ‘Planning for Healthy & Resilient Cities’ within the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 Conference on ‘#TranslatingtheGreenDealintoLocalAction’. The very committed mayor & deputy mayors of #Łódź 🇵🇱 (Hanna Zdanowska), #Nantes 🇫🇷 (Tristan Riom) and #Guimaraes 🇵🇹 (Paulo Lopes Silva) had some key messages: 1. we are already working hard on solutions which holistically deliver on climate mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity restoration, zero pollution and circular economy targets 🎯. It’s complex, but do not change the trajectory ! 2. to deliver by the ambitious timelines, in line with our EU commitments to the #GreenCities agenda, we need more direct access to EU co-funding. Think of this, in the next #MFF! 💶3. let’s device ways to better help 🇪🇺 companies which are, in the face of fierce global competition, delivering key products and services for the green transition. ♻️Many thanks also to Marieke Schouten, member of the European Committee of the Regions and Alderwoman of the municipality of #Nieuwegein 🇳🇱 for her inspiring final remarks, showing us that the #EuropeanGreenDeal increasingly IS a social, economic and environmental local reality. So let’s stay, collectively, on track 💪And well done Eurocities for all the organisational work behind.

Honoured to speak as a guest of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly Green Club chaired by Sasa Magazinovic on #Sarajevo's and #SarajevoFilmFestivals shared NetZeroCitiesEU mission....meaning how to achieve Net Zero Emissions within a decade. Joining Canton Prime minister Nihad Uk, SFF Director #JovanMarjanović, SFF Communications #AndrijanaCopf et al.The key messages being a) "You can't manage what you don't measure" b) as Mariana Mazzucato points out 'with a mission you can actually answer, “Did we achieve it or not? Yes or no?"' I also had the honour of presenting, on behalf of Metabolic's lead author Benjamin Elizalde Duran, the baseline GHG assessment of the #SarajevoFilm Festival GreenHouse Gas Inventory complete with recommendations for "ACTION".Many times what seems obvious is not, and you don't want to be operating over hypotheticals/myths, rather on science-based indicators...with the most accurate/robust data available. Also, might be worth to keep in mind that accounting GHG emissions today is becoming a common practice in several businesses, and can support in:i) understanding your operations/activities better,ii) several decision-making processes, iii) showcasing that you are "doing your part" which can then support SFF in fund-seeking activities (it's now becoming a key business performance indicator) andiv) in some cases can become a legal requirement.Supported by United Nations Ingrid Macdonald and UNDP Steliana Nedera

✍ Signature highlight! ✍ We are happy to share that Finnish EU candidate Ville Kaunisto (EPP) signed our manifesto, demonstrating his support for the cleantech transition and a future of sustainable innovation. 🌿 💡 Ville shared his perspective in the following words: ”Strong European single market is the key for Europe’s success. With past and on-going crises the politicians have taken the easy way out with massive state aids and implementing excessive regulation. This is not the right way for Europe. Cleantech can give Europe the edge in the global competition. We need more freedom and more competition with political stability and predictability for businesses and investors to succeed in Europe.”In our manifesto, we also highlight the importance of the single market in driving cleantech growth and the need for a predictable policy landscape. We are thrilled that Ville shares our perspective on this matter and are grateful to have his support as we move forward! 🚀 🌍 See the manifesto in full and follow signatures here: https://lnkd.in/dWszDebG Breakthrough Energy Tuomas Oksanen Jussi Teijonsalo Magnus AgerströmAlexander LidgrenEva AnderssonVille KaunistoMerja Kyllönen

Investments in productive chains in renewable energies and green industries that promote employment and sustainable development are some of the work opportunities that Bolivia can take advantage of in its relationship with the European Union. This was highlighted in a webinar organised by the Prisma Group, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the EU-LAC Foundation on Friday 19 April. In his opening remarks, the Executive Director of the EU-LAC Foundation, Dr. Adrián Bonilla, highlighted the dynamism of the political dialogue at the EU-CELAC Summit in Brussels last July. At the meeting, agreements were established for joint work on issues such as sustainable development, security, public health, environment, digitalisation and social equity, among others.During the virtual seminar, the Global Investment Agenda and the EU-LAC Digital Alliance were also addressed, which would allow the mobilisation of public and private resources in the aforementioned areas. The exploratory event served as a space for the exchange of ideas that could be taken into account in Bolivia's relations with the EU. More information on the Andean countries' relations with the EU can be found in therecording of the seminar "Opportunities for cooperation between the EU and the Andean countries", organised by the EU-LAC Foundation and the General Secretariat of the Andean Community on 8 February. On that occasion, the status of trade and association agreements was assessed, and the challenges and opportunities provided by the Global Gateway initiative, the digital transformation and the transition towards a green and fair economy were reviewed. https://lnkd.in/eHRfcE24Friedrich-Ebert-StiftungSergio Alberto FernandezGrebe HorstAndrés Guzmán Escobari
